🐢 Nest #13 is safe on South Beach—and the science behind it is fascinating! 🐢

Even during this intense summer heat, protecting the next generation of sea turtles remains the top priority of Friends of Huntington Beach State Park volunteers. This morning, another nesting Mama made her way up South Beach to deposit Sea Turtle Nest #13!  To ensure its safety, dedicated volunteers relocated the nest closer to the dunes, as it was laid close to the waterline.  

Did you know that sand temperature determines whether sea turtles are born male or female? 

Sea turtles experience Temperature-Dependent Sex Determination (TSD) and the warmth of the sand during their incubation determines their biological sex.

• Cooler sand produces male hatchlings

• Warmer sand produces female hatchlings.
